About Twiza

Twiza is a civic app that helps spot and clear illegal waste dumps in public space, in Algeria. The word “twiza” means collective mutual aid: work the community does together.

Twiza is not affiliated with any administration or political party. Cleanups are organised by the users themselves.

How it works

Users take photos of the waste on site; the points appear on a public map. Other users confirm them. A volunteer can then organise a group cleanup: they pick an area, set a place and date to meet, and the community turns up to clear it together. Before/after photos show the result.

No report can be created from a computer: it needs a photo taken in the field and a reliable GPS position. This website is for browsing the map, understanding the project, and joining the effort.

Organising group cleanups

This is the heart of Twiza: turning a lone report into shared work. Anyone can create an action, tie it to an area and to existing reports, and invite the community to join.

At the start the organiser checks in whoever showed up; at the close they record the tally (bags collected, points cleaned). The “Organise a cleanup” page walks through it.

Data transparency

The map of reports is open to everyone. The list of municipalities used by the app comes from open sources (Wikidata and the official administrative divisions).

Install the app, report the dumps around you, confirm other people’s. You can organise a cleanup and rally your neighbourhood.
